Asian Exhibition

We've spent 2 weeks researching and presenting a display about an Asian country. The countries we looked at Thailand, Sri Lanka, Philippines, Japan, China and India.
Here are some photos of this.
We invited parents to come in and Mrs Moran, Mr Rickard and Mrs Stuart were the judges.
We are still waiting to see who won!

BP Technology Challenge

On Friday afternoon we competed in a technology challenge. We had to make a game that included bats, a ball, and a free standing 90cm tall net. We needed to be able to hit the ball over the net to be able to win.
There was 1 stand out group who managed to complete the task and another group who came a close second.
Some people had trouble getting access to all the materials and this may have been why they were slower than the others.
We were only able to use some polystyrene (which made a huge mess we had to clean up at the end of the day), newspaper, cardboard, string and cellotape.
Here are some photos of us hard at work!

Room One's Weekly Treasure Hunt!

Every friday afternoon, a group of kids from Room One organise a treasure hunt for their class. There are around thirteen questions which every group answers to get a clue of where to find a letter. Only one person in a team is allowed out of the class to use the clue on their map to find the letter. When they find it in its hiding place, they come back to their teams in the class and get the next question. When they've found all the letters, they now have the quest of unscrambling the secret word. The first team to unscramble the word, wins the prize!

Step by step, it's like this:

1) As the team of organisers from the week(a limit of four people in the group) set the piles of paper that contain the sperate questions, the class gets into teams. It isn't compulsory to do the treasure hunt, but usually the teams set a limit to the amount of people there can be in a team.

2) The treasure hunt begins! Every team sends some one to get a map of the school, and the first question from the table where the organisers have set up. They return to their teams and try to work out the riddle, challenge or simple question, which sometimes requires computers to answer. They go to the organiser's table and whisper their answer to them. If they got it right, their map gets marked off for where the letter is and one person of the group sprints out of the class.

3) Arriving at the marked area, that person checks everywhere for piece of printed paper containing the treasured letter. The letters while usually be outside, not inside any buildings. It is at this point, or when the questions are being answered, when some teams go ahead of others.

4) This continues until a team has collected all the letters and solved all the clues.

5) Now they have the job of unscrambling the word and trying to be first to be the winners! First to unscramble the word wins. Some examples of the words we have had are: telecommunications; significance; bankruptcy; arachnophobia and consideration.

Geometry and Measurement

In maths we are exploring reflection and rotational symmetry. We did this by making snowflakes that have 4 lines (axes) of symmetry. We are also exploring 3D shapes and some students have chosen to make castles. This requires using diagrams of various parts of a model castle. Here are some photos of us hard at work and with our snowflakes.

Imagery by Logan Hunt

1) Fire spurred out of the sloped peak in a hot, red rush. Ash cloaked the ground and filled the nostrils of the coughing on-lookers. Boulders whirled to the grey, gloomy ground, exploding in a shower of rubble. Hours later, a once lava-filled valley was once again cold, dark and sad.

2) Dark clouds rolled in on a howling, raging wind. Trees bowed down to a blunt, growling force; as if trapped and enslaved by their whip-wielding master. A few, scattered streaks of light, followed by a roar of thunder sent the woman to abandon her gardening clips and her messy hedge to scurry inside.

3) The gorilla's light, furry feet danced mockingly on the shrub-littered ground, its hand crazily addicted to a small twig. Ferns were spread out around it; tall, sheltering trees smiled warmly at the laughing gorilla. With a playful scream, it tumbled gently to the ground, and into the comforting bed of soft, green leaves.

4) The world span around him, blurring into a kaleidoscope of a chaotic array of colours. His eyes stared keenly ahead; only seeing the twists and turns of the snaking metal road; the beat of his steps brushing briefly across the dusty ground. The athlete's shining, sweaty face glazed in the intense heat. The athlete swallowed hard. One more corner...

5) The centipede of carriages glided across the rusty track, with occasional trips and squeaks of complaint. The head billowed with thick steam, and screamed a coarse scream of warning as it twisted through green, serene meadows, ripping savagely the cloak of tranquillity that protected the rolling hills. Cattle rose their heads in annoyance at the unwanted intrusion and cast a dis-approving stare as the centipede passed by.
